Meru people, "Wameru" in Swahili, settled around the base of Mt. Meru about 250 years ago. The (W)arusha and (Wa)maasai (sister tribes, separate from Meru) also invaded this area around this time. Today, both Meru and Arusha still live in small villages on the slopes of the mountain near Arusha National Park. Traditionally, the Meru have been farmers, and the Arusha were farmers and herders; most still are. Although the traditions and tribal names of the Meru are often kept secret, our villages are very welcoming and open to casual visitors who would like to walk around.
