[Email to a friend...] Wow... long time! So I have to tell you about the best trip of my life to date. The only sad thing about it was that I had to come back to reality around midnight yesterday... So I arrived in Kenya last week and what a nice feeling it was to see Aaron at the airport in Nairobi. That day, we went to the national museum and even met local artists at their studio whose paintings were on display. I even tried to buy one. We went to a snake farm and finally we went to the best restaurant in the world-- The Carnivore. For only 18 dollars we had a buffet. A three course meal with all you could eat of different types of game meat... Hmmm... Lets see, I had zebra (the best!), ostrich, eland, hartebeest, crocodile, lamb, beef, and chicken. All that with a nice glass of Amarula. Have you had Amarula before? It kinda tastes like Kahlua except it has a hint of mango and something else. Perhaps someday we will share a bottle? Ha ha. It's really good. I brought a few bottles back. The next day we drove to Tanzania, where we caught up with Hezron (safari tour operator and Aaron's friend) and Frank (our cook) and off we went into the wild wild wild for a wonderful hike up this mountain called Ol Doinyo Lengai... It's steeper than Mt. Kilimanjaro but not as high. That was definitely the hardest thing I've done. But it was worth it when we got to the top, listening to the drumming music of the active volcano. How amazing! You could even feel and see the hot air from the crater and see magma. We took lots of pictures and I will email them once I get them... Oh! Did I mention we had 3 course dinners too! While camping! Tanzanian food is the best! Before I go any further... I think you should definitely travel sometime to Africa. It's sooo cheap too! It's sooo amazing how cheap it is to have an A+ time!!!! Words can't describe how amazing it was. Okay, so after the hike, we went on two safaris... The first one was near this place called Mosquito Village (don't think I got bitten but if I did... Hopefully no malaria since I took my malaria pills). I saw the most beautiful, yet interesting animal-- the vervet monkey. I still laugh when I think of it. It has neon blue balls (scrotum) and a hot red penis! It's the funniest thing. I didn't believe Aaron until I saw it myself. Oh I saw lots of animals. Two leopards together in a tree, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, etc... The second safari we went on was awesome too! It was in Tarengire, a place with literally hundreds of elephants. The coolest thing was this family of elephants about 5 of them with a little one that must have been a few months old. They crossed the road so peacefully and yet with so much caution, all in a single line. It was beautiful to watch. On my last night, we spent it in Hezron's village (Ndatu in the northern hills of Tanzania). We had ugali, veggies and the best avocado in the world. Ugali kinda tastes like Nigerian food called garri; a food most Africans eat. It's corn starch that you dip in vegetable or meat stew. Delicious! My last day, I spent shopping! Shopping like a crazy woman. I got lots of good deals... I will take pictures of things I bought and email them to you. The coolest thing I got was this antique wooden carving of a woman delivering her baby. It's soo nice shopping over there cos you bargain (and Aaron bargained for me a lot). There's no fixed price. Unfortunately, I had to come back... sad but true. All I know is this... If you love shopping, love hiking, love eating, love having a good time, love seeing animals, love the peace and quiet of nature, Africa is the place for you. And definitely, definitely go on a safari with Aaron. He is the best! Amazingly professional and yet your friend too!!! |
