South Africa Rocks! - 3 Weeks
 |
| South Africa is an amazing country with modern infrastructure, activities, facilities. This trip is best for college winter break, a summer month, or the young at heart. Also, this trip is doable without a guide for the very adventurous. Budget accommodation (backpackers) is sweet here. You can pay under $10 for a dorm bed in a renovated lodge or on a farm which almost always come with pool, bars, t.v. rooms, large yards with BBQs, and tourist help desks. Backpackers are usually half filled with cool people (usually youths, but not completely) from all over the world who love life, seeing the sights, hanging out, and parting. You can't beat the atmosphere. Dorm beds are typically under $10, doubles $10-15, singles $25. |
Week One: Jo'burg to Cape Town
|
| Yes, Johannesburg has a bad reputation that lives up to it in certain centers of the city. But the outlying areas of Jo'burg are wonderful areas that are not to be missed. Take a tour of SoWeTo, the once center of Apartheid and now a sad story turned miracle. Check out the gold mines. The new casino that is a complete replica of an medieval Italian city. Go on Safari in Kruger National Park. |
| We recommend taking the train from Jo'burg through Kimberly and the Karoo, it's a real cultural and geographical experience. There are plenty of other options, including charter buses, efficient car rents, and flights. |
Week Two: Cape Town & The (Party) Garden Route
|
| Cape Town is not only world renown for it's unique history (museums and tours), diverse cultures (cuisine and art), beauty (endemic flora, table mountain and botanical gardens), but also jubilant atmosphere (parties, clubs, raves, bars, concerts, universities). |
| The Garden Route is an actual area along the coast of South Africa. This is where accommodations really are there best. Small little cottage towns tucked in between coastal forests and lagoons that blocked from the Indian Ocean by sand dunes. The main towns along the way are touristy, but there are plenty of seemingly untainted towns and villages along the way. The backpackers are typically someone's home converted for extra fun. Usually they made of nice woods, decorated really nicely and are amazingly comfortable, replete with great company and atmosphere. |
| It is really best to rent a car one-way from Cape Town and drop it off at the last stop before taking the train/bus back to Jo'burg or driving straight to Jo'burg. |
Week Three: Garden Route & Return to Jo'burg
|
| As you probably will find Cape Town so awesome, you will have started your Garden Route leg late. If you went to Kruger, you definitely started it late. If not, visit the small wildlife reserves along the route that host zebra, baboon, springbok and even elephant. Make you way to Jo'burg (train/bus/car rental) via a lazy day surfing in Jeffery's Bay or partying in Port Elizabeth. Spend a day or two in Jo'burg visiting the local craft markets before heading home. |
