Character Story 1 - Sam Suffy This is a Journal entry, so I will write it like it is. Sunday, 13 February 2005 I am at a bar/restaurant, a local one, "Sam Suffy," which means, "It's enough". It's a good local place, mixed, but mostly westerners and expatriates, but some African/Malagasy. So should I talk about the characters here first? If I do then it will rattle on for a while and it won't be great for all of them, especially since my overriding thought here is always that the expat-French are really crappy people (they really abuse the sexual tourism business here, it's terrible). Anyway, let's start with the good ones, there is the owner. Don't know his name, but he is a jolly guy with an open button down shirt on, shorts, and flip-flops. He needs glasses to read the menu or what-have-you, but he keeps them in a draw behind/under the bar. The bar! It's about 15 x 15 and is covered with posters of half naked women, cars, planes, sports figures and couples scantily dressed, about the engage in sexual activity. It's funny! It has a satellite connection (although it is only a step up from a grand assortment of shacks), some outside covered tables and the food is AWESOME! and cheap. Mostly fried food and BBQ. Rob had a 1lb shrimp and I had a BBQ fish, a big snapper or something. Rocking. Okay, there is this cool couple, a Norwegian chick, very attractive but friendly looking, red head with a Malagasy guy, named Dozzy, who has a huge afro, red glasses and is portly, just a little, but enough to remind you of Santa, especially with the go-tee and afro. Last night, we all met at L' Oasis (cafe/bar/restaurant/hotel) but it is just a coincidence that we met again here (well, not really since Rob loves this bar and wants to eat here every night). 1. From left: Jamaica?, Rob, Aaron, Dozzy, Norwegian![]() We tried to find a disco, but first we drove around the entire town in a tiny car looking for a place, but didn't find it so we went to the French one. Stiltskin was there, this French dude with dreads, weight lifter/parachute pants, and a shirt that says STILTSKIN on it. 2.![]() There is a Malagasy guy who speaks Swahili, a little (worked in Kenya), chilling at the bar. He is the local guy at the bank who helped me change money today and told me that (at the bar that is) if I needed more money, come to him first. Ok. A little black market I guess, don't know. There is a Belgian woman working on a pipe dream to have an educational TV channel, but she basically show crappie B movies of American soldiers killing bad guys. She has short hair, 7" to 10" with one fat braid on the right side by her ear. It's Annoying actually. Pierre just walked in. He is a Luxemburg guy who owns Mada-Bar, a French cafe that all the womanizers go to in the afternoon to get wasted. I don't really want to talk about this so I will stop for now.... 1.![]() 2. Now that is what I imagined Cyberspace to look like, don't you? I mean, 20 years ago, when there was just a spark, I bet Al Gore dreamed of this moment. ![]() 3. The coastal women of Madagascar use this reddish face cream/mask to keep their skin nice and beautiful. I don't know what it is, but many women use it. It is applied in the day time and then removed at night. The sun is so strong here, that it probably just protects from the sun, if nothing else, which is a good thing. It was very striking to see. At first I didn't know what it was and asked around and found out, but before then, it was only my imagination that told me what it was. Either way, the women are very beautiful and it just added another dimension of mystery to them. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. ![]() 6. ![]() 7. Sam Suffy ![]() 8. Sam Suffy ![]() 9. Of course, your very handsome Afremail host. If you haven't seen me for a while this might be somewhat of a shock since I haven't had long hair for few years and the sun is basically turning me African! The next shot is of Rob. This was a great restaurant we found called "Sam Suffy" which I think translates into "it's enough" in French. It was great. A local place where we could dine fine and fill our bellies with French seafood and pay pennies for! It was a local bar, sorta like a "Cheers". ![]() 10./52 Sam Suffy ![]() |
